Your HVAC system is on its last legs, you need a new IT provider, or it’s finally time to upgrade that clunky software you’ve been putting up with for years.
So you do what any savvy business owner does: you shop around for the best deal.
But here’s where things get real. Let’s say your HR Team is begging for a better payroll system, or your team needs new scheduling software. You should get quotes from multiple vendors, compare features, and run a formal evaluation.
Instead? The first salesperson walks in, gives you a fancy demo, and suddenly you’re thinking, “This looks pretty good. We can spread the payments over a few years. Let’s pull the trigger.”
Sound familiar?
You’re busy running your business. You don’t have time to spend three weeks comparing software features. You need a solution yesterday. But here’s the thing: would you buy a car this way, or hire the first person interviewed?
Not a chance.
When you’re car shopping, you know exactly what you want. It could be the fuel efficiency, the safety features, or enough space for your equipment. You compare models, check reviews, and negotiate the price.
Now imagine two identical Cars sitting on the lot, same make, same model, same color. But one has all the bells and whistles—heated seats, premium sound system, advanced safety package. The other? It’s the base model with everything you actually need for your daily commute and weekend trips.
The fancy one costs $8,000 more.
Many of us (and yes, I’m making an assumption here) would buy the more affordable model. It does the job. It’ll serve you well for years. And that extra $8,000? You can invest it or use it for other personal needs.
So why do we treat business purchases differently?
The pressure to “just get it done” can cost you thousands or tens of thousands in unnecessary features, inflated pricing, or systems that don’t actually fit your needs. Take the time to compare. Get three quotes. Ask the tough questions.
Your future self and your bottom line will thank you. The same process should play out when looking for talent for your company.
Due Diligence doesn’t have to slow you down, but it will help you make the right choice!
